Dear Students and Parents,

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the "Jr. High Experience".  Middle School is full of ups and downs but includes great learning experiences, both academically and socially.

The most important thing to remember is that these two years include tremendous change.  Everything about your student is changing, their bodies, their attitudes and values, their relationships, even the way they learn and process information.  The growth and change they go through is second only to the first two years of life!

You will find that students at this age experience the following:

  •     Forgetfulness- Your student's mind is so preoccupied with other issues,  issues that are very real and meaningful to them, they truly do not remember things well.
  •       Irritability- Middle-schoolers can be irritable.  Their hormones are raging, and their brains are re-wiring so expect mood changes that are unpredictable and sometimes draining.  It seems as soon as you get used to one mood, another quickly replaces it.  It helps if parents are willing to listen without lecturing.  It is also helpful to support teachers when they need help with the flood of emotions that can sometimes come out in the classroom.
  •       Power Plays- As children mature, they seek more independence, so a power play is nothing more than an attempt to exert power.  Unfortunately, sometimes they do not always choose the most appropriate way to convey this.  Most are non-verbal (slamming doors, sulking, and refusal to talk), manipulating (siblings, parents, teachers, and friends).  We try to choose our battles and to not give in and bend rules or values that are important.

Open communication is what we strive for!

If we can help in any way, please feel free to call our office or send us an email.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Brittany Miller
